BRIEF NOTE ON SOIL CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES IN KENDRAPARA DISTRICT

PREFACE :

        Kendrapara District comprises of 9 Blocks i.e. Kendrapara, Derabish, Mohakalpara, Marshaghai, Garadpur, Rajnagar, Rajkanika, Pattamundai and Aul. Most of the area of the District are low lying or water logged. The area are being flooded more than 4 months in rainy season. Again some area are affected by high tide.

        Though most of the area are suitable only for paddy cultivation. But beneficiaries are not getting good price by productive paddy cultivation. So socio-economic standard of beneficiaries are miserable. To eradicate this problem, non-paddy, cash crop has to be adopted. Unfortunately land pattern is not ordinarily suitable, which require land management. To increase the production potentialities, the Soil Conservation Department has taken vital roles by following means .

1. Restoration of productivity through provision of surface drainage, pirate drain, interception drain, renewal of drainages, congestion drainage line treatment and bio-drainage system.

2. Reduction of intensity of draught through rain water trapping, periphery bunding and moisture conservation method.

3. Reduction of salinity by excavation of creeks and reservoirs.

4. Enhancement of irrigation potential through creeks, water harvesting structure, diversion drain and other farm ponds.

5. Eco-restoration through plantation.

6. Reclamation of water logged area to improve the land productivity.

7. Reclamation of PATA land and make suitable for cultivation.

        The project objective aim primarily on launching labour intensive programmes to generate more and more employment opportunity in long term basis, interception of different land based projects programme through massive restoration and reconstruction effort.
